چکیده

Ten histologic sections were sampled from similar cortical regions in each of 84 autopsy brains removed from patients aged 60 to 97 years. The sections were stained by the Congo-red method and examined under polarized light for the presence of cortical {parenchymal) cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA). Some degree of CAA was found in 36% of all brains examined, with a higher proportion of patients affected in each successive decade of life. Angiopathy was seen most frequently and was of greater severity in the parietal and occipital gray matter. Overall, it was often a patchy and asymmetric lesion. There was sparing of subcortical white matter and the hippocampi. CAA was most severe in cases of Alzheimer's disease, but occurred in the absence of this condition. Stroke Vol 14, No 6, 1983

Autopsy study of incidence and distribution of cerebral amyloid angiopathy in Hisayama, Japan.

The incidence of cerebral amyloid angiopathy in a general population was evaluated in brains of 400 consecutive autopsies of residents of Hisayama, Japan (November 1971-October 1983). Six samples taken from frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, occipital lobe, hippocampus, and basal ganglia of the same side of each brain were stained with both hematoxylin and eosin and Congo red. The spec...

-Amyloid, Blood Vessels, and Brain Function

Cerebrovascular disease and Alzheimer disease are common diseases of aging and frequently coexist in the same brain. Accumulating evidence suggests that the presence of brain infarction, including silent infarction, influences the course of Alzheimer disease. Conversely, there is evidence that -amyloid can impair blood vessel function. Vascular -amyloid deposition, also known as cerebral amyloi...

Oxidative stress triggers the amyloidogenic pathway in human vascular smooth muscle cells.

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy, associated to most cases of Alzheimer's disease (AD), is characterized by the deposition of amyloid ss-peptide (Ass) in brain vessels, although the origin of the vascular amyloid deposits is still controversial: neuronal versus vascular. In the present work, we demonstrate that primary cultures of human cerebral vascular smooth muscle cells (HC-VSMCs) have all the s...

Passive immunotherapy targeting amyloid-β reduces cerebral amyloid angiopathy and improves vascular reactivity.

Prominent cerebral amyloid angiopathy is often observed in the brains of elderly individuals and is almost universally found in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Cerebral amyloid angiopathy is characterized by accumulation of the shorter amyloid-β isoform(s) (predominantly amyloid-β40) in the walls of leptomeningeal and cortical arterioles and is likely a contributory factor to vascular dysfun...
